SUNY Poly, Gallaudet University to Meet in NEAC Women's Basketball Finals

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – SUNY Poly and Gallaudet University emerged victorious in Saturday’s North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Women’s Basketball Semifinals to set up a North-South showdown on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the conference crown with the semifinal and final round of the tournament hosted at Keuka College.

SUNY Poly is appearing in its fourth-straight conference championship game while Gallaudet University is back in the finals for the first time since 2011. The winner of Sunday’s matchup will receive an automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Semifinal Game One

No. 4 Penn State Abington 47, No. 1 SUNY Poly 60 (Boxscore)

The two teams battled in a low-scoring first half with SUNY Poly holding a slight 18-16 advantage but the Wildcats broke the game open in the third quarter when they outscored Penn State Abington, 20-9. Junior guard Kiersten Leos (Camden, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats to the 60-47 victory. SUNY Poly’s Molly Burdick (Vestal, N.Y.) added 10 points while Jaida Washington (Elmira, N.Y.) pulled down 10 boards. The Nittany Lions were led by Wynter Bess (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 20 points while Sydney Barrow (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in 15 points. SUNY Poly heads into Sunday’s championship game at 22-5 overall while Penn State Abington wraps up its year at 12-14.

Semifinal Game Two

No. 3 Gallaudet University 60, No. 2 Keuka College 54 (Boxscore)

After facing a five-point deficit at the half, Gallaudet University rallied in the fourth quarter to top Keuka College by a final score of 60-54. Gallaudet senior guard Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) scored seven of the Bison’s 16 fourth-quarter points while recording a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) also had a big game for the Bison with 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Keuka College’s Sam Laranjo (Averill Park, N.Y.) paced the Wolves with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Gallaudet improves to 17-9 on the year while Keuka College sees its season come to a close at 19-6 overall.
