Keuka College Defeats SUNY Poly to Earn NEAC Women's Basketball Championship

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – Behind a strong defensive effort, the Keuka College Wolves knocked off tournament host SUNY Poly, 72-60, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Women’s Basketball Championship game on Sunday.

The win gave Keuka College its eighth title in program history and its first berth into the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament since 2012. With the win, the Wolves improve to 20-5 on the year. The Wildcats finish the season at 21-6 overall.

Keuka College opened the game with a layup from Sam Laranjo (Averill Park, N.Y.) and never trailed Sunday afternoon. The Wolves took a 33-27 lead into the half with their strong defense keeping the pressure on the Wildcats through the second half. Keuka College finished the afternoon with 10 steals and five blocks in a game that extended the Wolves winning streak to 11 games.

Reighly Melochick (Minersville, Pa.) led the Wolves’ offense with 20 points while Laranjo added a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists. Laranjo was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player with 29 points and 18 assists on the weekend. SUNY Poly’s Khristaijah Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) and Kiersten Leos (Camden, N.Y.) each netted 19 points while junior Rylie Smith (St. Johnsville, N.Y.) added 15 points off the bench.

Keuka College will find out its next opponent on Monday during the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Selection Show, which will be available on NCAA.com at 2:30 p.m.
