Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) has been named the NEAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week after a tremendous set of performances for the Gallaudet University Bison. The freshman recorded four first-place finishes and just missed two others across back-to-back home meets, while setting two Gallaudet program records in the process. Against Marymount Friday night, Martinez won the 100-yard breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:05.83, with that time erasing a decade-old school mark of 1:06.09 set by Michael Hubbs in 2006. A day later against Elizabethtown, Hubbs' other school record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.79) was shattered after Martinez won the event in 2:22.47. It was one of three first-place finishes on the day, as he also won the 1,000-yard freestyle by over 47 seconds with a time of 11:10.21, along with helping the Bison win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:43.25. He also placed second in the 400-yard IM (4:36.17) and missed first by just 0.20 tenths of a second Saturday, and did the same in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.80) on Friday after missing first by just 0.19 tenths of a second. Martinez has now set four Gallaudet school records in just three meets this season.
