NEAC Announces Swimming & Diving, Men's Volleyball Student-Athletes of the Week

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its Student-Athlete of the Week selections in the sports of women’s and men’s swimming & diving and men’s volleyball for the week of Jan. 23-Jan. 29.

Brandon Arentz (Mount Wolf, Pa.) from the Penn State Altoona Lions has been named the NEAC Men’s Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week. The rookie outside hitter helped the Lions move to 3-1 on the year with a 3-2 comeback victory against Penn State Behrend on Jan. 28. Arentz led his team with 14 kills and five blocks (one solo, four assists) to finish the match with a .323 hitting efficiency. He added eight digs and two service aces in the Lions’ win.

Wally Rivera-Berrios (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico), a sophomore libero representing the Penn State Altoona Lions, has been named the NEAC Men’s Volleyball Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week. Rivera-Berrios had a match-high 12 digs in Penn State Altoona’s five-set win over Penn State Behrend, averaging 2.40 digs per set. He also added six assists in the win.

Nichole Secor (Fairport, N.Y.) earned four first-place finishes for the Cazenovia College Wildcats to take home NEAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Student-Athlete of the Week honors. Secor was one of two Wildcats to win four events as the Cazenovia women won the SUNY Delhi Invitational in dominating fashion. The junior swimmer edged out the competition by 11 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle by clocking in with a time of 2:13.52. Secor cruised to victory in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 20:27.44, which was good for 1:02 better than the runner-up. She also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:51.32) and the 400-yard medley (4:47.62).

Anthony McGorsik (East Hampton, N.Y.), a junior swimmer from the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers, has been chosen as the NEAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. McGorsik placed second in two events as SUNY Cobleskill finished third at the Skidmore Sprint Invitational on Jan. 28. In the 50-yard freestyle, he came in 0.32 seconds behind the race leader. McGorsik also swam to a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.60 in the nine-person field. He also competed in the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-yard medley, placing fourth and fifth respectively.

With the final weekly swimming & diving honors of the 2016-17 season complete, attention now turns to the NEAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships set for Feb. 10-12, hosted by Cazenovia College.
