Mavericks Overtake Spartans in Second Half of Final Road GameBuffalo, NY ? The D?Youville men?s basketball team was defeated in their final road game of the season Wednesday evening to the Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 95-76.
After the two teams were tied at 2-2, Medaille pulled ahead to take a 15-2 lead after nearly seven minutes of play. The Spartan offense would begin to get back on track with five straight points from Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet). A three from Hartzog was the first of four straight threes from D?Youville that pulled them to within five at 21-16.
The scoring load then fell on the broad shoulders of Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy); who hit one of those four consecutive threes and then went on to score six consecutive points for D?Youville and they trailed 24-22 with 5:38 remaining in the half. A pair of free throws from Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) tied the game at 24-24, erasing the 13-point Spartan deficit. The Mavericks and Spartans would trade leads for the remainder of the half, but it was D?Youville who was ahead at the half by the score of 35-34 after a Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia Mumford) free throw.
Rosales got the scoring started in the second half with four straight points and a 39-35 lead for D?Youville. Within three minutes of the half starting, Medaille would tie the game at 43-43 just to take the lead a few minutes later. Through to the 12:12 mark of the second, the Mavericks would hold at most a three-point lead over the Spartans until they began to pull away with an 11-point lead with 10:06 remaining in regulation.
Medaille would continue to extend their lead as the second part of the half ticked on. Their lead increased to 14 and then 20 with 4:37 left in the game. The Mavericks were able to keep the Spartans a safe distance away throughout the rest of the game and take the victory over D?Youville by the final of 95-76.
?We played hard and gave the first place team all they could handle for 30 minutes,? said head coach Earl Schunk. ?To their credit they made big shots at some crucial times and were able to pull away. I was proud of our guys? effort.?
Coming off the best game of his career and first career double-double, Nwaekeke recorded a career high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Also recording a double-double was Rosales with 15 points and a team high 14 rebounds. The team had four players in double-figures, including 11 from Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and 10 from Hartzog.
Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) had nine points with six rebounds in the game. VanAuken had a team high four assists to go with four rebounds.
The next game for the men comes on Saturday, February 18 as they host La Roche at 4pm. Saturday?s game is the final game of the season for the D?Youville and the team will honor their seniors before the game.
